Cycle 2 (August 28th to Sept 5th) Assignments
Assignment 1: Due by NOON, Wednesday, September 5
Choose your best photo from the grade you were assigned to cover.
1. Name it with a "slug":
FirstGrade01_08282012_SSJ
(Grade)(two digit shot number)_(date you took the shot-mo/day/year)_(your initials)
Naming your photos correctly will be really important once we get more than 100 photos in the library, so get in the habit of naming them this way.
2. Upload it to your blog, and type the "slug" beneath it.
3. Write a paragraph explaining how this photo demonstrates one of these principles:
a. Narrative photo
position condition
face case
enough stuff
b. Rule of thirds
c. Leading Lines
d. Vectors
e. Zoom In
f. Framing
g. Cropping
h. Color
Special Instructions for Disposables: Finish the film in your camera and give it to Mr. St. John by NOON, Friday, August 31, 2012. I'll develop it over the weekend and then you can pick it up with Mr. St. John on Tuesday, Sept. 4th. You are also free to develop the film yourself--take it to Walgreen's and have them develop the negatives and put them on a disk for you.
Example of a Blog Entry: see at the end.
Assignment 2: Due before class (7:45a.m.), Thursday, September 6
Grade Level Photos
1. Select your ten best shots and put them in a folder on your desktop.
2. Label them in the standard way.
8thGrade05_08282012_SSJ
3. We'll work with them during our next class. I suggest that you have them backed up somewhere--on a flash drive, for example. Eventually we'll have them saved on the Josten's server.
Portraits
1. If you haven't done so, upload your portrait to Managebac.
2. Label your portraits this way:
KellyPortrait02_08202012_SB
(Name of Subject)(Two digit photo number)_(date you took the shot-mo/day/year)_(photographer's initials)
3. Put your portraits in a folder on your desktop--we'll work with them in class.
Changed--New Process!
Optional Assignment 3: Cover Design Feedback
If you would like to give feedback on the cover design, please log in to the editorial meeting Tuesday evening (Sept. 4th) at 7p.m.
Instead of giving written comments, you can log in, see the cover, and engage in the discussion. Here is the link to my virtual classroom:
https://sas.elluminate.com/m.jnlp?sid=2009377 password=M.00FCB94919EFC6EB8772E90D58A288
Click on the link. It will ask you for permission, just allow what it is asking for and it will eventually log you in.
This assignment is not required, but will give you a chance to become engaged in the editorial process. I recommend that you also post your comments to your Weebly site, so that you have evidence of your involvement with the design.
This is optional because I know you all have enough to do, but we'd appreciate and value any of your input. Email me if you have any questions!

Example of a Blog Post for Week 2, Assignment One.
This photo of Rie Miyoshi demonstrates the use of vectors. Rie is looking to the right of the photo, and the viewer tends to follow the direction of the subject's gaze. I composed this photo to leave some breathing room on the right side of the photo.
